On this episode of my podcast The Filmcraziest Show, my guest was cinematographer for Tim Orr, the DP on Dickinson for the past two seasons and upcoming third season. The show, an Apple TV original series, stars Hailee Steinfeld as Emily Dickinson as we learn more about her life in Amherst, Massachusetts, in the 1850’s.
The show blends period piece with modern comedy in an entertaining way, and the way the show is brought to life and its time period is great. From in front of the camera to the behind-the-scenes with set designers, production designers, costume designers like Jennifer Moeller (who I spoke with here), and especially Tim Orr’s work on the show as he’s responsible for the consistent visual look of the show.

We talked specifically about the series’ second season and we talked about initially designing the look of the show, adding the set of the Evergreens and filming those extravagant parties, lighting the scenes and the cinematographer’s job, having to storyboard certain scenes like the opera scene or the séance scene, as well as the difference between being a cinematographer on a film and on a series, as he’s able to work with five different directors each season and work to their styles.
There’s more in between, and you can listen to the episode below, go here to download it, or check out the YouTube conversation below, too. As well, Dickinson is now streaming on Apple TV+.
