Director Scott Derrickson brings the same eerie style to his latest film “Deliver Us From Evil” as he did with “Sinister”, even though this is the more basic of the two, without the same heart-pounding effectiveness. Early on, the scares rely heavily on creepy crawlies and scares from hyperactive animals. This choice for atmosphere doesn’t enable any ability to differentiate itself from “The Silence of the Lambs”, until it gets into the story.

The competent mystery begins in Iraq with a small army group who find a cave with odd inscriptions. This leads to 1990s New York where the real-life Sergeant Ralph Sarchie resides. A passionate detective, Sarchie is deeply affected by the abuse of children – it is established early on. The mystery starts when a seemingly insane woman Jane (Olivia Horton) throws her two-year-old baby in the lion’s den at the local zoo. Sarchie is sent on an awry journey and first-hand encounters with malicious evil, and makes him want to find out why a woman with no previous criminal record just lost her mind.

Basic horror film scares can be found in this film: creepy crawlies, strange noises from the basement, weird static, children’s laughter, and children’s toys that come to life. Latin inscriptions might make you expect a basic exorcism film and the long-run, and that’s what is delivered. Some aspects of the mystery are intriguing, particularly the repetition of lyrics from a song by The Doors (“Shut the door, the damn door”). The film, running nearly two hours, is too long for something this basic and something that delivers only a few intense sequences and a creepy atmosphere.

What does set this apart is a sensitive performance from Eric Bana; as he truly captures the essence of Sarchie, who cares deeply for others, even if he is not the best at showing it. By being so dedicated to his community, he neglects to spend time with his family (Olivia Munn isn’t notable as his wife). This is an enjoyable aspect. This is a movie that’s about how people can be affected by secondary evil, and the effects it has on them. Sarchie has been deeply impacted by this kind-of evil, but is now experiencing a whole other type of evil, a primary evil that sometimes can’t be explained. Many of these concepts are brought up by a priest named Mendova (Edgar Ramirez), a heroin addict who found God.

One good thing about this film: This is Joel McHale’s first truly enjoyable film role. He’s been playing jerks since his days of TV’s “Community” and that’s the only place it has previously been effective. This time he plays a mildly likeable character, and perhaps action or horror films might be his calling in the movies.

November 9-11 Box Office Results

Skyfall raked in a majority of the dough this weekend, with $90 million (including Thursday’s earnings)! It so deserved it, too, because it’s just about one of the finest action films of the year, and it is generally one of the best of the year as well! And Lincoln took in an impressive $900, 000 at eleven theatres this weekend. Also, at least surprising to me, Pitch Perfect sneaked into the Top 10 this weekend at #8, but that’s pretty sweet for it!   Well, now to the numbers!

I’ve been putting these reviews at the bottom of my results article because I’m trying to get a little bit more traffic for them (in case you readers missed the reviews). And I, just now, realized by revealing the scores, it isn’t any good at getting more traffic. Who wants to read a review when they already know the score I gave it? I don’t think I’d do very well working in advertising…

Sinister (2012) Review

Ellison Oswalt is a struggling writer whose last big hit was ten years ago. He and his family move into a house, in order for him to pursue a book idea. He’s moved them into a house a few doors down from a crime scene before, but he didn’t do that this time – he moved them into the house the actual crime scene took place. He finds a box of Super 8 films in the attic, that help him learn how and why the people who owned the house before them were murdered. This puts them in the path of a dangerous children soul-eating Ancient Pagan God by the name of Bughuul.

I’d like to say first that I’m not used to supernatural horror, because it just scares the hell out of me. Even for lovers of supernatural horror, this is a terrifying feature.

The film is flawed in terms of the latter segment of the film, it suffers from a few horror clichés, and at times I had trouble believing some of the stuff that was going on. Despite its flaws, there is a lot to love about it.

Sinister is deeply dark, wickedly atmospheric, and inventive. It’s so twisted and convulted, that you just may ask yourselves, “Okay, which Stephen King book is this based on?” It relies more on its pretty great story, and its atmosphere, rather than those lame ass uneffective pop-out scares you see in traditional horror. There is a fair share of pop-out scares, but they’re very effective thanks to the great score and the sounds that go bump in the night.

I know everyone would, or should be if they’re in a right state of mind, be terrified of moving into a possibly haunted house. I know I would.

Jennifer Lawrence, in the horror film House at the End of the Street that was released in September, fell victim to that typical horrid dumb blonde in horror movies cliché, and while Ethan Hawke isn’t as stupid as her character in this, he does have his own fair show of falling victim to those old-as-Santa-Claus horror cinema clichés. Seriously, one would think that the great Ethan Hawke would have the common sense to turn on a freaking light. When I hear the slightest noise in the night, I get out of bed with a light saber, ready to chop Darth Maul in half, if that’s what is needed. This guy, he just seems to take a swig of whiskey and go right to the noise with shocked curiosity. I wonder if Jessica Chastain in next year’s Mama is going to fall victim to these lame ass clichés? Probably.

Okay, okay. At least he got a baseball bat at one point in the feature.

One thing that I just had the hardest time believing, is how the family isn’t hearing any of the crap that’s going on in the house. They must be heavy sleepers. Like, heavier sleepers than corpses. Ellison might as well just be the only character in the film in most scenes.

Ellison’s insistence to stay in the house can get a little drastic. He thinks he’s helping his wife by not telling her, but he really isn’t. I know I would have when all this supernatural stuff starts to happen. Ellison is just so bent on having another bestseller, that he sort of just feels distant from his family. Greed really begins to consume him.* This film really shows that writers can have stressful lives. Ellison is always cracking open his bottle of whisky, hardly sleeping at all, and he practically only has the one wardrobe. At least when he’s being scared half the death, he’ll have a comfy sweater on.

*If you’re a kid, Bogghul will consume you, too.

The film is generally dark. Both thematically and that the dimly lit scenery. It isn’t very easy on the eyes, but it’s ultimately effective. This is a piece of impressive filmmaking with great direction, and some Super 8 films that are both graphic and chilling, and they add in to the great horror crime mystery, and really make this one stand out. It is combined well with the general cinematography. The tie-in of crime is really something nice, and the mythology is pretty interesting, too.

With some horror films, you may have the tendency to get scared when that big old sun, that often brings a sense of security to the viewer, go down. Since, of course, you know that the evening is the best setting for scares to occur. With this one, man, I was terrified. There was sweat on my palms by the end of it all.

Often, once a year, we should expect at least one great horror gem. For me, 2011’s was Scream 4. And this year, so far, The Cabin in the Woods is the gem. Sinister is a close second, and easily the scariest film of 2012. And, possibly, one of the scariest films I’ve ever seen.

There’s this one really cool, but chillingly terrifying sequence, that has impressive cinematography, nice slow motion action and is quite original. I won’t say anymore about that scene, because it really is cool to watch play out.

The great thing about this film is its wicked atmosphere. The tone was set right from the get go, with the opening graphic scene.

Sinister has some fine direction, and a nice story, but it still suffers from clichés, a poor could-have-been-so-much-better latter half of the film. Its atmosphere is something that one could easily love, or just as easily loathe. Sinister may not be the finest horror film of 2012, but it certainly is the most frightening.

Box Office Results: October 19 – 21

Paranormal Activity 4 took the top spot at the box office this weekend with a disappointing $30.2 million. But, the joke’s on the audience, because they just paid to see the same film for a fourth time. The other new release, Alex Cross, took 11.75 million at the box office. These two films performed poorly for the critical audience. The other new release, The Sessions, was well-acclaimed and earned $121, 000 at four theatres. All 41 films in theatres right now made for a[n] (estimated) weekend grand total of $129, 584, 600.

Box Office Predictions #1 – October 12

These are my box office predictions for the weekend of October 12-14, but only for the four brand new releases: ArgoHere Comes the BoomSeven Psychopaths and Sinister.

Argo

Plot: As the Iranian revolution reaches a boiling point, a CIA ‘exfiltration’ specialist concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador.

Argo is Ben Affleck’s third feature film as director, the other two being Gone Baby Gone and The Town. Affleck’s last directing, and acting, gig – The Town – made $23 million in its opening weekend, and Affleck usually makes a pretty large box office splash. Town is a bank heist thriller, and that sort of concept may appeal to a larger audience than this, because political thrillers aren’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea. This though, has the whole ‘true story’ pitch, and it has a lot of fine performers like Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and John Goodman. The film’s trailer makes itlook great, so hopefully the film will live up to its trailer.

Argo Prediction: $34 million

Here Comes the Boom

Plot: A high school biology teacher looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent extra-curricular activities from being axed at his cash-strapped school.

Here Comes the Boom is the newest Happy Madison Productions film that is a martial arts action-comedy. It reminds me of 2008’s Never Back Down, which opened to $8 million. Sandler’s films often make over $100 million, when he’s headlining. Kevin James’ last headlining film, in relations with Sandler, was Zookeeper which opened to $20 million. His last action comedy was Paul Blart: Mall Cop that opened to a bit over $30 million. This seems like another mindless comedy, but those can be fun.

H.C.B. Prediction: $20 million

Seven Psychopaths

Plot: A struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster’s beloved Shih Tzu.

Seven Psychopaths is a crime-comedy that is Martin McDonagh’s second feature film, and he also wrote and directed it. A huge attraction for this is the great cast that includes: Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken and Abbie Cornish. McDonagh’s last film was the British crime-comedy In Bruges that in total grossed $7.7 million, and a little under $450 thousand in its first weekend. It has grown in audience since its release, though. I think this one will make a greater splash because I’ve seen one trailer for this on a popular channel, and I can’t recall seeing any for In Bruges. This also has a better-known cast. The comedy may not appeal to all, but it seems just hilarious to me.

S.P. Prediction: $4 million

Sinister

Plot: Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

Sinister has been given a great advertising campaign. I’ve probably seen the trailer a good six times, but not because I looked it up or anything. The story seems pretty interesting and quite scary. A big advertisement hook has been it’s from the producer of Insidious and Paranormal Activity. Insidious grossed $13.2 million in its opening weekend, and $97 million in total – and P.A. grossed $193 million in total. The hype for this has been great, and horror lovers are going to be lining up to see this one.
