Interview: Director and writer Peter Hsieh, “Drive All Night” (The Filmcraziest Show)

Here’s another interview in my series of interviews with the team for Drive All Night, an ambitious, bizarre and fascinating San Jose-set neo-noir film about a taxi driver, Dave (Yutaka Takeuchi) driving around San Jose with a mysterious passenger, Cara (Lexy Hammonds), an encyclopedia of video game facts who has Dave drive her all over town, without a destination in sight. The film also stars Sarah Dumont and Johnny Gilligan.

In this interview, I spoke with the director and writer of the film, Peter Hsieh, in his feature directorial debut. In the conversation, we talked about video games, conversation icebreakers, how driving around all night helped inspire the story and got the creative juices flowing, Yutaka being an Uber driver when he was hired for the film, as well as what it was like shooting at the arcade seen in the film and how it was exactly how Peter envisioned it would be when he wrote the script.

As well, Drive All Night will be playing as part of CAAMFest from Thursday, May 13 to Sunday, May 23 (the film’s ticket page can be found here).
